Independent Lab Testing

Every year we send our full line to an independent lab and test for PFAS, BPA and formaldehyde. We test against the EU's threshold, which is stricter than anything the US or Canada requires, because we'd rather set our own bar. Here's what came back, for both the toilet paper and the paper towels.

Toilet Paper

Is Betterway toilet paper independently tested?

Yes. Every batch, white and brown, is independently tested each year for PFAS, BPA, and formaldehyde.

Does it contain PFAS?

We screen for PFAS using total organic fluorine testing, the same method labs and certifiers use industry-wide. Both colors came back dramatically under the EU's limit, the strictest standard in the world for this test, more than double what the US and Canada require.

Does it contain BPA?

No. No detectable BPA in either white or brown.

Does it contain formaldehyde?

No. No detectable formaldehyde in either color.

How often do you test, and why to EU standards?

Every year, on our full line. We test to the EU's threshold even though we sell in the US and Canada, because it's a tougher bar than either country requires. Most companies in this category don't do independent testing like this at all. We think you should be able to ask any brand this question and expect a real answer.

Paper Towels

Are Betterway paper towels independently tested?

Yes, both white and brown, every year, for PFAS, BPA, and formaldehyde. Because they're used in the kitchen, we also run an additional test tied to FDA food-contact material standards.

Does it contain PFAS?

Same testing and same result as our toilet paper: total organic fluorine screening, well under the EU's limit, the strictest in the world for this test.

Does it contain BPA or formaldehyde?

No. No detectable BPA or formaldehyde in either color.

How often do you test, and why to EU standards?

Every year, full line. We hold ourselves to the EU's stricter threshold rather than the US minimum, because we'd rather set our own bar than meet someone else's.
